Indian passport photo: 630×810 pixels

Quick answer

An Indian passport photo is a 630×810 pixel JPEG (35×45 mm) on a plain white background, with the face filling about 80–85% of the frame and no glasses. TravelPrepKit uses a 20–200 KB preparation target; follow the live portal’s upload limit.

  1. 1. Read current passport photo guidance

The mission’s current page specifies an unaltered 630 × 810 pixel photograph, white background, visible eyes, neutral expression and even lighting. This is public guidance, not an authenticated upload screen.

  2. 2. Find the photograph and signature upload

In the mission portal's My Applications area, open the menu for your application and look for Upload Recent Photograph/Signature. Upload Supporting Documents is a separate option. The live portal may change the wording or order.

Passport photo sizing: dimensions and KB

A passport photo sizer, resizer or compressor may change different parts of a file. Dimensions describe its width and height in pixels, millimetres or inches. File size describes how many KB or MB the JPEG uses. Cropping sets the frame; resizing changes pixels; compression reduces bytes.

For example, a portrait can already have the required Indian passport dimensions but still exceed the byte limit shown by your upload field. Keep the required dimensions, prepare a smaller file and review its clarity. Changing only the KB count cannot correct the wrong crop or shape. Follow the authority’s rules on digital editing as well as file size.

  • Choose the application before the size

For an Indian passport, use its matching preset and review the prepared crop and measurements. For another passport authority, follow its current instructions rather than reusing Indian dimensions.

Choose a passport photo preset or your own requirements
  • Review the finished portrait

Check the frame, face, background and file-size result against the application instructions. If a small copy loses detail, return to a clear original. A byte count alone cannot establish that a photograph is suitable.

  • Use your own numbers when required

When another authority supplies different dimensions or a byte cap, enter those requirements and review the result. Custom file checks do not verify every appearance rule or guarantee acceptance.

A passport photograph is not a passport scan

The photograph is a portrait of the applicant. A passport scan is a copy of a document page. If an application asks for a passport bio-page PDF, follow that document field’s instructions instead of applying portrait dimensions to the whole page.

JPEG format

image/jpeg

JPEG only.

If it fails: Will be exported as JPEG.

File size 20–200 KB

20.0 KB – 200.0 KB

Official guidance states pixels, not a byte cap; 20–200 KB is the published VFS upload band and is accepted by the portals.

If it fails: Drop the photo — it will be compressed into 20–200 KB at 630×810.

630×810 pixels

630×810 px (35×45 mm)

The ICAO digital size Indian passport applications have required since 1 September 2025: 630 px wide by 810 px high (35×45 mm).

If it fails: Will be cropped and resized to 630×810.

7:9 portrait

7:9 (35×45 mm)

35×45 mm. A square e-Visa JPEG will be rejected.

If it fails: Will be cropped to 7:9.

White background

Plain white background.

If it fails: Stand on a white wall, or let auto-whiten a near-uniform background.

No shadows or patterns

Near-uniform background. No flash reflection on the face.

If it fails: Retake on a plain white wall, a step away from it.

Single face

exactly 1

One person only, looking at the camera.

If it fails: Frame only the applicant.

Face 80–85% of the photo

Close-up of the head and top of the shoulders so the face fills most of the 35×45 mm frame.

If it fails: Auto-crop targets an ICAO 35×45 portrait. Retake if hair or chin is cut off.

No glasses

ICAO photographs are taken without glasses, so there is no reflection and the eyes are fully visible.

If it fails: Remove glasses and retake.

Eyes open, mouth closed

Full face, front view, eyes open, mouth closed, natural expression.

If it fails: Look straight at the camera with a relaxed, closed-mouth expression.

No head covering

Hats and caps are not permitted, except a documented religious covering that does not hide the face.

If it fails: Remove hats and fashion headwear. If you wear a covering for religious reasons, the face from chin to forehead must still be visible.

Questions

What size is an Indian passport photo in pixels?

630 pixels wide by 810 pixels high, the 35×45 mm ICAO size Indian passport applications have required since 1 September 2025.

Can I use a square photo for an Indian passport?

No. A square e-Visa or OCI photo does not match the required 7:9 passport shape.

Can I wear glasses in an Indian passport photo?

No. ICAO photographs are taken without glasses, so there is no reflection and the eyes are fully visible.

What file size should the passport photo be?

Official guidance states pixels rather than a byte cap. TravelPrepKit uses a 20–200 KB preparation target; follow the limit displayed in your live upload.
