Current government instructions captured in the browser on 8 October 2026. Private applicant upload screens are not simulated.

  1. 1. Read the current passport PDF requirements

The live instructions specify a scanned passport bio page in PDF format, 10–300 KB. Use the passport named in your application and confirm that every printed detail is readable.

Prepare the passport page, then check the result

  • 1. Start with the passport bio page

Use a clear scan or photograph of the page with your portrait and passport details. This is a document upload; the separate portrait photo belongs in the photograph field.

  • 2. Choose the matching PDF preset

Use the India e-Visa passport PDF preset and review its prepared copy. A phone image needs converting to PDF; renaming the file extension does not convert it.

  • 3. Check bytes and page layout separately

KB and MB measure file size. A4 describes page dimensions. Fitting a scan on an A4 page does not by itself prove that the file fits the upload limit. Check the final byte size and make sure the page is upright with no clipped edges.

  • 4. Read the smallest details

Inspect names, dates, document numbers and the machine-readable lines. Keep the original. If compression makes details unreadable, start from a clearer scan rather than submitting a blurred copy.

Example: the PDF fits the page but is still too large

A passport scan can look correctly placed on an A4 page while its file is still above the byte cap. Prepare it with the matching preset, then review both the size result and the text. If it fits but the details are blurred, the smaller file is not a useful result; use a clearer original and review again.

  • Starting with photos or separate scans?

Use the existing scan-to-PDF tool to combine the pages your application requests, keeping them in the required order.

  • A different portal gives a different cap?

Use its actual instructions. The general PDF size reducer explains custom byte limits, page layout and the readability trade-off; the e-Visa limit is not a rule for every document upload.

PDF format

application/pdf

Passport bio page must be uploaded as PDF.

If it fails: Use the assembler to export a PDF. JPEG/PNG scans should be converted first.

File size 10–300 KB

10.0 KB – 300.0 KB

Minimum 10 KB, maximum 300 KB on the current e-Visa portal.

If it fails: Use Compress in the assembler. If still over the cap, rescan at 150–200 dpi in grayscale.

A4 pages, upright

Pages should be A4 (or letter scaled to A4) and right-reading.

If it fails: Rotate any sideways scans. The assembler fits each page to A4.

Questions

What is the file size limit for the e-Visa passport PDF?

Between 10 KB and 300 KB on the current e-Visa portal.

Can I upload a photo of my passport instead of a PDF?

The portal asks for PDF. Take a photo or scan of the bio page and TravelPrepKit will turn it into an A4 PDF inside the size window.

My scan is 2 MB. How do I get it under 300 KB?

Prepare an A4 copy and review its final size and text before paying. If a readable copy cannot fit below 300 KB, use a clearer original; do not submit blurred passport details.
