1. Read the current photograph requirements
The live instructions specify a square JPEG, 10 KB–1 MB, full front view, eyes open, no spectacles, plain white or light background, no shadows and no borders. The screenshot is the public instructions panel; it is not an applicant’s upload screen.

Photo dimensions and file size are different checks
Dimensions describe the image's width and height in pixels. File size describes how many KB or MB the JPEG uses. Cropping makes the photo square; resizing changes its pixels; JPEG compression reduces its file size. Check all three in the prepared result.
The current public e-Visa instructions require equal height and width but do not publish pixel bounds. TravelPrepKit uses a 350–1000-pixel square preparation range. That range is a tool target, not a universal government minimum or maximum. Follow any additional instructions in your live upload field.
For example, a square JPEG can have the right dimensions but still exceed the upload’s byte limit. Keep the required crop and pixels, reduce the file size, then check the finished JPEG’s measurements and clarity. A lower KB count does not fix a blurred original.

Resize and compress to your own photo requirements
Is the India visa photo limit 300 KB or 1 MB?
For the India e-Visa route, the current official page lists a JPEG photograph between 10 KB and 1 MB. It separately lists the passport bio-page PDF between 10 KB and 300 KB. The regular visa route has its own instructions. Identify your application and file type before using a size limit from a search result.
Compressing an e-Visa photo below 300 KB is possible if it remains clear and above 10 KB, but 300 KB is not the current public e-Visa photo cap. Keep the portrait JPEG separate from the scan of your passport.
Prepare a plain background while keeping photo processing private
Use a recent front-facing photo in even light, with a plain white or light-coloured background and no shadows on the face or backdrop. Keep eyes open, remove spectacles and leave room around the full head. If the original is blurred or has strong facial shadows, take a new photo.
TravelPrepKit crops, resizes, compresses and prepares the background on your device. Selected files stay on your device; optional account saving and transfers between devices are separate choices. Review the background, face and final file before downloading.
Every requirement
e-Visa digital photo, as last checked on 15 Sep 2026. Each rule says how to fix a file that fails it. Preparation ranges used by TravelPrepKit are tool targets; follow your live portal’s upload limits.
JPEG format
image/jpeg
The portal accepts JPEG only (.jpg / .jpeg).
If it fails: Export or convert the photo to JPEG. PNG, HEIC, and PDF will be rejected.
File size 10 KB–1 MB
10.0 KB – 1.00 MB
Minimum 10 KB, maximum 1 MB on the current e-Visa page.
If it fails: Prepare photo recompresses this for you. If it is still too large, crop tighter or export at a lower JPEG quality; if it is under 10 KB, export at a higher one.
350–1000 pixel output range
350–1000 px on both sides
TravelPrepKit keeps both sides between 350 and 1000 pixels for a clear, manageable square. The current public e-Visa page does not state pixel bounds.
If it fails: Prepare photo crops and resizes this into a conservative 350–1000 px square range.
Square aspect ratio
1:1 (square)
Width must equal height.
If it fails: Prepare photo crops this to a square around the detected face for you.
Plain white or light background
Background should be plain light-colored or white.
If it fails: Prepare photo replaces a near-uniform background for you, and shows you the result before you download it. A plain white or very light wall gives the best result.
No shadows, patterns, or other objects
Background must be near-uniform — no shadows, textures, furniture, or other people.
If it fails: Stand farther from the wall to reduce shadows. Remove patterned wallpaper and other people from the frame.
Single face, front view
exactly 1
Exactly one face, looking at the camera.
If it fails: Frame only the applicant. Crop out anyone else before uploading.
Head size in the frame
Head from top of hair to bottom of chin measures 1–1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) of the 2-inch (51 mm) frame — about 49–69% of its height — with the eyes 1⅛–1⅜ inches from the bottom. Children under ten are allowed some latitude.
If it fails: Move closer or let TravelPrepKit crop to a head-and-shoulders square.
No head covering
Hats and caps are not permitted, except a documented religious covering that does not hide the face.
If it fails: Remove hats and fashion headwear. If you wear a covering for religious reasons, flag the exception — the face from chin to forehead must still be visible.
No spectacles
The current e-Visa page asks for a front-facing photograph without spectacles.
If it fails: Remove glasses and retake the photograph.
Eyes open, neutral expression
Full face, front view, eyes open, mouth closed.
If it fails: Look straight at the camera with a relaxed, closed-mouth expression.
Taken in the last 6 months
The photo should look like you today. Recency cannot be verified automatically.
If it fails: Confirm this photograph was taken within the last six months.
Questions
What size should an India e-Visa photo be?
Square (width equal to height), JPEG, between 10 KB and 1 MB. The current portal page does not state pixel limits; TravelPrepKit keeps both sides between 350 and 1000 pixels so the square stays clear without growing large.
Can I wear glasses in an India e-Visa photo?
No. The current e-Visa page asks for a front-facing photograph without spectacles.
What background does the e-Visa photo need?
Plain white or light-coloured, with no shadows, patterns, furniture or other people behind you.
Does an India e-Visa photo have to be under 300 KB?
The current public e-Visa photo requirement is JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB. The 10–300 KB requirement on that page applies to the passport bio-page PDF. Regular visa instructions are separate; follow the route and upload field you are using.
Can I resize and compress my India visa photo without uploading it?
Yes. TravelPrepKit prepares the e-Visa photo on your device. Selected files stay on your device; optional account saving and device transfers remain separate choices. Review the square crop, background and final size.
Can I reuse my e-Visa photo for OCI or a passport?
No. An OCI photo needs a light background that is not white, and a passport photo is a taller 630×810 pixel shape. Each application needs its own file.
